Important Notes:● The expiry month of your plate is based on the first two letters of your last name. The initial registration cost is pro-rated based on the number of months until your expiry month.● Farm plate registration fees vary depending on the pulling weight of your vehicle.● Trailer registrations are permanent. A one-time lifetime fee applies at the time of initial registration.● Antique vehicle registrations are also permanent and do not require renewal.
Vehicle Registration Expiry Month by Last Name InitialIn Alberta, vehicle registrations expire in a specific month based on your last name (surname) or company name. Your registration will expire at midnight on the last day of that assigned month. Use the chart to the left to see when your renewal is due, and plan ahead to avoid a lapse in registration.

How to Register an Out-of-Province Vehicle in Alberta

If you're bringing a vehicle into Alberta from another province, state, or country, it must go through an Out of Province Vehicle Inspection before it can be legally registered. What to Bring:● Valid Identification● Proof of Ownership (Bill of Sale or previous vehicle registration)● Proof of Insurance
Steps to Follow:● Visit our registry office to obtain a Request for Vehicle Inspection form.● Take this form to an authorized mechanic for the Out of Province Inspection.● The mechanic will issue an Out of Province Inspection Certificate—valid for 14 days only. (*If you're not registering within that time, bring the inspection form back to our office, and we can update the vehicle status for a small fee.)
